A Long Way Home

About

alispesach5.jpg

My name is Alissa. I am a 22-year-old olah hadasha (new immigrant) to Israel from Massachusetts. I graduated college in June 2006 and moved to Israel at the beginning of September 2006.

I orginally started writing for myself as a way to sort through my excitement and fear about my move to Israel. Once I made aliyah, I started writing as a way to keep in touch with family and friends back in America.

I am a bundle of contradictions. I love both my countries, Israel and America. I love my family and friends and trying new things (both in lab and in life). I have a special fondness for junk food, cats, and sushi.

    THANK YOU!
I’m in the process of making Aliyah. (and trying to write my essay for NBN) I printed out all your blogs. You are inspiration to me! Please contact me, I would love to be in touch. I’m not a crazy kook, or am I? I’m thinking of going to Israel without a job or money!

    Hey there Alissa –

very good to find your blog, actually it was linked off of Israelity, either way…

I’m in the ‘considering’ phase of Aliyah, I’ve gone back a forth several times, the hold up is nothing existential…I’m older then you by a fair bit and am worried about settling in, finding work in my field, etc…I’m just starting to blog about it…so check it out, maybe you’ll have some helpful comments for me ;-)

Anyway, keep it up! You’re an inspiration – Kol HaKavod

i too stumbled across your blog from israelity and started looking around – the first poem on your poems page really moved me. ahuva amergi was my next door neighbor, and i was in america when she was killed. you’re really a talented poet.

Yehudis – are you making aliyah this summer? I can’t contact you because I don’t have your email, but feel free to email me at aliscohen at gmail if there is anything I can help you with.

Jesse- that’s great that you’re considering aliyah:-) I will definitely check out your blog and don’t hesitate to be in touch if you have any questions. I definitely have some older friends I’ve met through NBN if you’d like to be in touch with people somewhat older than me.

L – I did not know Ahuva personally. When I was in college we had these victim of terror bracelets that we sold to raise money for One Family Fund and mine had Ahuva’s name. When I was studying at Hebrew U. during my junior year, I visited a family in Atzmona who knew her family so I had the opportunity to visit her grave. It was very special to me, especially since at the time both the fate of Gush Katif and the bodies buried there was so uncertain. Thanks for the compliment on the poem:-)

Hey there I was just going through your blog and it is very good. I’m in the process of making aliyah from the Philippines to Israel and I was wondering if you could spare some time to answer some of my questions and also give some more detail about your aliyah. Would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
