A Long Way Home

“You should be ashamed of yourself, you have forgotten us in war. Signed, the children of Sderot.” (graffiti in Sderot)

A direct hit to a classroom in Sderot a few days ago.

“Because not all of our classrooms are protected, we have to study in shifts. We have no gym class because there is no safe place to practice… During the night we can’t fall asleep because of the drones and helicopters flying overhead, and during the day we can’t concentrate because we are too tired.” -Gon

“We have no normal life. We never know what will happen the next hour when Qassams fall; we are not only afraid for ourselves, but also for our families. It’s traumatic to think that someone close to us will get hurt. It’s just terrible.” -Bar

“I have a hard time concentrating in school, and the Qassams affect my entire life…Every time I want to do something, I give up because I think that the alarm will go off at any moment. I can’t study and I can’t even play soccer.” -Niv

When Elliott Ness wanted to figure out what to do about the violence in Chicago during prohibition he asked a long time beat cop what to do.

This is what the beat cop said.

ou said you wanted to know
    how to get Capone.

Do you really want to get him?
    You see what l’m saying?

    - What are you prepared to do?
    - Everything within the law.

    And then what are you
    prepared to do?

    lf you open the ball
    on these people,

    you must be prepared
    to go all the way.

Because they won’t give up the fight
until one of you is dead.

    l want to get Capone.
    l don’t know how.

    Here’s how you get Capone:
he pulls a knife, you pull a gun.

He sends one of yours to hospital,
you send one of his to the morgue!

    That’s the Chicago way!
And that’s how you get Capone.

What this has to do with the situation Israel finds itself in? Well I will let you figure that out for yourself.

    —-

Your Honour, the truth is that Capone
is a killer and he will go free.

There is only one way to deal with
such men, and that is hunt them down.

l have. l have forsworn myself.
l have broken laws l swore to defend.

l am content that l have done right.
    That man must be stopped…

By the way, who said,”It is better to do evil than be evil?” One hint, it was the same man who said “it is better for a lover of the truth to tell a lie than a liar to tell the truth”.

    One matter further, gentlemen.
    We fight on their level.
    With trickery, brutality, finality.
    We match their evil.
I know, James. I was reputed to be a gentle man.
But I was commander in chief…
during the four bloodiest years of my country’s history.
    I gave orders that sent…
a hundred thousand men to their death…
at the hands of their brothers.
    [ Sighs ]
There is no honorable way to kill, no gentle way to destroy.
There is nothing good in war except its ending.
    [ Sighs ]
And you are fighting for the lives of your crew.

    You are the survivors.
    The others have run off.
It would seem that evil retreats when forcibly confronted.
However, you have failed to demonstrate to me…
any other difference between your philosophies.
Your good and your evil use the same methods,
    achieve the same results.
    Do you have an explanation?
You established the methods and the goals.
For you to use as you chose.
What did you offer the others if they won?
    What they wanted most– power.
You offered me the lives of my crew.
